BI is a branch of information technology dedicated to decision support. According to this brief definition, the BI consultant’s main mission is to provide his clients with certain indicators enabling them to better manage their activities. But what are the tasks of a BI consultant within a company?
The main missions of a BI consultant
Thejob of a BI consultant is both delicate and strategic since it involves the implementation of reports for decision making. Its expertise is based on decision-making tools and, of course, solid technical skills.
If we go into detail about the missions of a Business Intelligence consultant, he or she is first and foremost responsible for analyzing the reporting needs of the client company. It also handles the localization of production data, not forgetting the extraction of data from a datawarehouse or datalake, while participating in its modeling.
The processing and modeling of centralized data allows it to develop intuitive and interactive reports and dashboards for decision-makers while ensuring the accuracy and relevance of the indicators they contain.
The personal qualities and technical skills of a Business Intelligence consultant
To successfully carry out all the missions listed above, the business intelligence consultant must have specific technical skills and unique personal qualities. He must also have functional knowledge and master the business of his clients. He/she is able to synthesize data from different computer systems. He or she must be proficient in retrieving data from the various IT systems, as well as in returning data to users using specific tools.
He/she must have an excellent command of transactional and decisional database tools as well as a good knowledge of data processing and analysis tools (SQL, R, Python…), mathematics and statistics.
Finally, the BI consultant must also be able to manage the various stages of change management. In addition to these different skills, he/she should be rigorous, versatile, a good communicator, autonomous and have a spirit of synthesis.
