On June 26, 2024, SQORUS organized the Green IT Meet & Learn an event dedicated to the promotion of responsible digital technologies, bringing together industry experts, partners and customers around themes linked to the sustainability of information systems (IS). The event, punctuated by workshops and experience-sharing, explored innovative solutions for minimizing the environmental impact of digital technology, while optimizing the performance of IT infrastructures.
Commitment to digital responsibility
The event kicked off with an introduction to the importance of responsible digitalby Mathieu Flaig, HR Strategy & Transformation Director at SQORUS.
Participants were made aware of the issues surrounding the ecological footprint of digital technology, which now accounts for 38% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Faced with this reality, it is becoming essential to rethink our IT uses and implement sustainable IT strategies.
Our Green IT Offers: concrete solutions for eco-design
A highlight of the event was the presentation of SQORUS’ Green IT offerings. Joffrey Chu, Director of the IT Division, detailed SQORUS’ methodology for helping companies reduce their carbon footprint through IS energy diagnostics and eco-design plans. These approaches aim to optimize the use of resources, notably by maximizing data center efficiency, and to encourage the use of energy-saving technologies.
Feedback: energy diagnosis of an OCI customer environment and carbon footprint reduction plan
The experts in attendance were then treated to the SQORUS team’s presentation of the energy diagnosis of one of its customers’ OCI environments, and the associated carbon footprint reduction plan.
Thanks to GreenFinOps measures, this reduction plan will cut the IS carbon footprint by 25%, while continuing to meet the customer’s business challenges.
The calculations used to achieve this result were presented in detail, together with the associated assumptions (PUE, carbon intensity, measurement step, storage, network, etc.).
Digital technology and the environment: figures that call for urgent transformation
The graph below shows the projected evolution of the environmental impact of digital technology between 2020 and 2050, according to a “business as usual” scenario (continuity of current practices). It highlights four key indicators, all of which show a worrying rise:
- Carbon footprint (+187%), representing the increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Resources used (+179%), reflecting the increase in raw materials required to operate digital infrastructures.
- Final energy consumption (+79%), reflecting the sector’s growing energy needs.
- Consumption of metals and minerals (+59%), linked to the resources used to manufacture digital equipment.
SQORUS’ Green IT solutions, such as energy diagnostics and eco-design plans, aim to reverse these trends by promoting more responsible use of digital technologies.
Participation of 4 OCI customers
For this event, SQORUS invited four of its customers (Société Générale, BPCE, AXA and Club Med) using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to attend the presentation and share their own sustainable digital transformation initiatives. These companies shared their practices and the benefits they have derived from using Cloud solutions to improve the energy efficiency of their infrastructures and reduce their environmental impact. This session highlighted the potential of OCI solutions to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Green IT workshops: collaborative action
To encourage the active participation of guests, the event offered three interactive workshops, each addressing specific aspects of Green IT, such as software lifecycle management, Green IT evaluation criteria for partners, and IS energy assessment. These workshops offered a unique opportunity to deepen discussions and collaborate on concrete solutions to be applied in companies.
Conclusion and Apéro des Régions
The event closed with a summary of the best practices discussed, followed by a convivial moment: the “Apéro des Régions”. Les participants ont pu échanger autour des actions à mener pour aligner leurs stratégies digitales avec les objectifs de développement durable tout en renforçant leur marque employeur.
In conclusion, the Green IT Meet & Learn marked an important milestone in raising awareness and helping companies to achieve sustainable digital transformation. SQORUS continues to position itself as a key player, offering eco-responsible technological solutions that meet environmental challenges while optimizing the performance of information systems.
