Work-study programs have many advantages for you, students!

Apprenticeships are appealing to more and more young people; in October 2018, the Ministry of Labor announced the creation of more than 294,000 new contracts in 2017. Among the main reasons given, the majority of students cite“the combination of theoretical and practical teaching in companies“.

Accompanied by a tutor, young people have the opportunity to discover the professional world, learn its codes, put lessons into practice and acquire skills and real professional experience.

A real plus on your CV when you graduate! In fact, just look at the rate at which these students enter the workforce: within 7 months of completing their apprenticeship contract, seven out of ten apprentices find a job, 60% of them on an open-ended contract.

It does, however, require a certain amount of organization and rigor in one’s studies, as the testimonials of young graduates attest.

Joining the company as a work-study student also allows you to fine-tune your career plan and find your way. Depending on the work-study rhythm proposed (3 weeks/ 1 week; 3 days/2 days…), you may be entrusted with long-term or recurring projects. At the end of their work-study contracts, some will want to specialize, while others will target companies in a specific sector when sending their applications.

And last but not least, a work-study program allows you toobtain a diploma or qualification free of charge, from CAP to Bac+5 level, with all tuition fees paid by the company hosting your work-study program.

Apprenticeship or professionalization contract: which system should you choose?

Whether you’re a student at a business or engineering school, or even at university, the apprenticeship contract is open to all young people aged 16 to 25 wishing to gain a state diploma (CAP, Bac, BTS, Licence, Master’s…) or a professional qualification registered in the Répertoire National des Certifications professionnelles.

Offered over a period ranging from 1 to 3 years, apprenticeship training entitles the apprentice to remuneration of between 25% and 78% of the SMIC (or the agreed minimum wage for the job held for those over 21).

Open to all, regardless of age (including the under-26s and jobseekers), the professionalisation contract enables trainees to obtain a qualification or diploma while receiving remuneration ranging from 55% to 100% of the SMIC (or 85% of the conventional minimum wage for the over-26s).

The duration of this contract is generally between 6 and 12 months. To find out more, contact your school or training organization!
