To be a good technical and functional consultant, it’s important to have certain qualities. These skills are effective in the smooth running of the work, but also in the development of professional skills. Five qualities are important.

The roles of the technical and functional consultant

A technical and functional consultant must have certain skills and competencies related to his or her field of activity:

  • Functional consultants put their functional expertise to work on business digital transformation projects. It leads missions of assistance in the choice, accompaniment and project management. This enables him to contribute to the pre-sales phase.
  • The technical consultant intervenes in complex technological environments. From the design phase, through development, to the choice of architecture, right up to the acceptance phase, he supports the customer.

The term ” technical-functional consultant ” is often used to designate a consultant who is both technical and functional. Its missions often revolve around the study of the customer’s needs, the definition and assistance with the parameterization of the solution to be implemented, the realization of development, the acceptance and testing of the solution, the deployment, the reporting and everything related to the training and assistance of users.

The importance of a technical and functional consultant for a company

The consultant’s mission is to meet the challenges of his clients. It must be able to accompany them in the search for deployable solutions that best meet their expectations. That said, this is a collaborative effort.
Setting up such a project is based on listening and analysis. It requires a spirit of synthesis, reflection and reactivity.

The qualities to have as a consultant

In addition to the five main qualities – technical skills, good interpersonal and writing skills, curiosity, open-mindedness and rigor – the consultant must also demonstrate certain soft skills.

The job of technical and functional consultant requires active listening in order to meet the expectations of the customers. The ability to listen allows the consultant to better understand the needs and to provide a personalized service. The consultant must also have excellent communication skills.

Good communication involves the ability to make oneself understood by others. This relational ease is an important quality which allows the consultant to put himself in the place of the customer and to suggest the good alternatives. Although the technical consultant can work alone in the development phases, he must interact with his functional colleagues and the client.

He must therefore be sociable to collaborate effectively within the project team in which he works. This quality will allow him to establish a relationship of trust with the client and his team for a better collaboration.
