OCI cloud migration: Saint-Gobain gains scalability and cuts operating costs
SQORUS supports Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France, France’s leading distributor of building materials, in the migration of its PeopleSoft ERP to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
SQORUS support
SQORUS, Oracle and Saint-Gobain: close collaboration for a successful migration
To carry out this project, Saint-Gobain relied on SQORUS, a certified Oracle partner, alongside Oracle teams. A tripartite organization (SQORUS / Oracle / Saint-Gobain) was set up to coordinate all the work involved: infrastructure, security, network and applications.
The challenge
Infrastructure under pressure to keep pace with business demands
Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France faced several major challenges:
- Aging infrastructure: obsolete P8 servers requiring either hardware reinvestment or migration to the cloud
- Monthly closing process under strain: month-end invoicing is extremely resource-intensive, and processing takes all day.
- Lack of flexibility: inability to quickly adjust CPU resources to absorb load peaks
- Complex ecosystem: more than 11 TB of data to be migrated, thousands of data flows to be secured and a hundred scripts to be transformed (from AIX to Linux Oracle).
- High safety requirements: strict compliance with Saint-Gobain group standards
Background & objectives
A major retail player in search of modernization
Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France, a subsidiary of the Saint-Gobain group, is :
- 12 billion € in sales
- 400,000 customers
- 22,000 employees
- 2,200 sales outlets across France (including Point.P and Cedeo banners)
The PeopleSoft “Calypso” ERP, in place since 2005, is at the heart of the Finance IS. After a double application upgrade in 2023-2024, the IT Department wanted to go one step further by modernizing the infrastructure to :
- Gain scalability: adjust resources to demand, especially during monthly closing peaks
- Guaranteeing availability: ensuring high availability with defined RTO/RPO targets
- Reduce operational costs: optimize infrastructure spending with a FinOps approach
- Access new services: benefit from a wide range of integrated services (database, analysis, AI, storage, APEX, Golden Gate)
- Improve performance: reduce response times and optimize data processing
- Reinforcing safety: overhauling standards and guaranteeing compliance with Saint-Gobain requirements
- Improving carbon footprint: a GreenOps approach in line with the Group’s commitments
The SQORUS solution
A 4-stage migration strategy for a controlled transition
Faced with two possible options (reinvesting in On-Premise hardware or migrating to the Cloud), Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France chose Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
SQORUS designed a four-phase methodological approach to meet the specific challenges of Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France:
1. Landing Zone
- Identification of resources and validation of existing context
- Definition of a migration plan adapted to the group's constraints
- Coordination with security and network teams
- Laying the foundations for a governed, secure and scalable cloud environment
2. Building the infrastructure
- Robust architecture designed for performance, availability and resilience
- Resource configuration on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (instances, networks, storage)
- Setting up Exadata services to host PeopleSoft
- Deployment of a Fast Connect tunnel to optimize data transfers
3. Data migration
- Incremental data transfer to minimize downtime
- Transformation of a hundred scripts as part of the migration from AIX to Oracle Linux
- Secure recovery operations to guarantee data integrity and consistency
4. Preparing for production launch
- Secure thousands of flows with internal and external partners
- Activation of supervision and DRP services
- Dry runs" (full-scale simulations) to validate the schedule
5. SQORUS support
- Rigorous management: 4 key milestones to validate each stage of the project and ensure Go/No-Go criteria are met
- Multi-team coordination: regular alignment meetings with the right resources mobilized for each stream (security, network, infrastructure, applications).
- Tailor-made approach: adapting the methodology to fit the schedule and the specificities of the context
- Enhanced security: complete review and adaptation of security standards to meet Group requirements
The results
A new direction for Saint-Gobain’s Finance IS
Thanks to the expertise of SQORUS and a rigorous methodology, Saint-Gobain Distribution Bâtiment France has successfully migrated to OCI with concrete results:
- Production launched in 2 days instead of the 3 initially planned
- Complete migration of all environments without major incident
- No disruption for users the day after the switchover
- Greater stability from the very first weeks of operation
- 2 hours saved on the monthly billing process
- First FinOps optimizations already identified and underway
Future prospects
Towards a mature, intelligent Cloud
This successful migration marks a first for Saint-Gobain:hosting an application on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. An open door to new opportunities:
- Run organization to be co-constructed: clear definition of roles and responsibilities between teams for a shared operating model
- Finer FinOps monitoring: reporting, alerting and resource optimization for greater cost control
- Continuous optimization: monitoring and alert thresholds to be adjusted as needed
- BCP & DRP: validation of continuity plans and regular testing to ensure resilience
- OCI catalog: exploring new services like APEX and OIC to enrich the application ecosystem

Director of Finance for SGDB’s IT Department
” This project mobilized a lot of people: security, network, infrastructure, applications. We worked hand in hand with SQORUS to see it through. Being able to draw on their OCI expertise was a real asset. This migration was also an opportunity to overhaul our security and add a new layer to comply with Saint-Gobain Group requirements. It’s a great success. “
