What is a postmodern ERP?

A Postmodern ERP can be built in different ways, but it is above all a core system enriched with a portfolio of SaaS applications, “hooked” closely with the main system.

The concept of ” Post Modern ERP has been defined by Gartner as “a technology strategy that automates and connects administrative and operational resources (such as finance, human resources, purchasing, manufacturing, distribution, …) with an appropriate level of integration, which balances the gain from a global offering of application provider(s) integration, against the need for flexibility and agility of business activities. This definition clearly identifies the existence of two strategic approaches to ERP: Administrative and Operational “.

How is a postmodern ERP system built?

A “Postmodern ERP” system is made up of multiple components: from finance, logistics, manufacturing, to marketing or employee allocation. The prerequisite is an ERP application, integrated with various components that enrich the main system according to the specific needs of a company or organization.

While most large companies currently use all-inclusive ERP systems on their own sites (on-premise), the trend today is towards a post-modern model. This is partly initiated by the strategy of “natively SaaS” software publishers, having themselves embraced a SaaS approach. These publishers mobilize significant resources to provide a flexibility capacity that less agile publishers do not have.

SaaS pure players often focus on niche functionalities, forgotten or poorly addressed by the historical leading players.exte

Towards a postmodern ERP trend?

The trend ofpostmodern ERP, seems well established, perennial and will evolve towards an integration of new functionalities and systems, transforming them into global suites integrated in the Cloud. Because this trend has not escaped the attention of smaller players, they often present their large system compatibilities as an intrinsic part of their value proposition.

Niche software publishers are not the only beneficiaries of this trend. New technology companies and integrators are positioning themselves on this market where the integration of various components requires experts experienced in the integration and development of complex components in order to make post-modern ERP systems work.
